WAVERLY JV FALL TO NEWARK VALLEY, 36-3

NEWARK VALLEY — Waverly scored the first 10 points of the game, but Newark Valley rode a strong defensive effort in the second for a come-from-behind, 36-34, win here Tuesday evening in IAC South Large School Division junior varsity girls basketball action.
After a free throw by Paige Robinson opened the scoring with 5:57 remaining in the first quarter, Peyton Shaw scored to make it 3-0, and Addison Westbrook added two buckets 33 seconds apart to make it 7-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.
Shaw knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:58 remaining in the first half to make it 10-0 before Newark Valley got on the board with a pair of free throws 10 seconds later.
Both teams clicked offensively in the second quarter, each scoring 16 points. Westbrook drained two 3-pointers, and Robinson and Shaw each had one. Waverly led 23-16 at the half.
Newark Valley outscored Waverly, 10-5, in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 28-26 entering the final eight minutes, then used a 6-0 spurt late in the fourth quarter to take a 36-32 lead with 2:46 remaining in the contest.
Shaw knocked down a pair of 3-pointers with 1:40 remaining in the game to provide the final margin, but the Lady Wolverines couldn’t muster another score.
Westbrook led Waverly with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Shaw scored 1 points, and Robinson added five points.
Waverly returns to action Thursday when it hosts Notre Dame.
