ACKLEY LEADS WAVERLY TO 3-1 MARK IN SEASON OPENER; MINAKER FINISHES SECOND FOR LADY WOLVERINES

WATKINS GLEN — The Waverly boys, led by runner-up senior Nate Ackley,
opened the 2021 season with a 3-1 mark here Tuesday afternoon in IAC
cross country action, while freshman Harper Minaker led the incomplete
Lady Wolverines with a second-place finish in the five-team meet.
The Wolverines notched wins over Notre Dame, Watkins Glen and Groton, but lost to powerhouse Lansing.
Ackley finished second in a time of 18:36.9 in the field of 32 runners, while Gavin Schillmoeller was seventh in 20:27.47, Sam VanDyke was 13th in 21:52.8, Matt Atanasoff was 15th in 22:14.9, and Brayden Hurd was 24th in 27:08.99.
Minaker clocked in at 21.37 in the field of 17 runners, while Olivia Nittinger placed eighth in 24:49, Elizabeth Vaughn was 12th in 25:04, and Ally Barrett was 16th in 32:26.
Waverly returns to action Saturday morning at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Chase Hine finished second for the Waverly modified team, clocking in at 9:50.05, and Lauren Gorsline was the second girl to cross the finish line (eighth overall) in a time of 10:57.05.
Finn Williams placed ninth in 11:26.07, while Taylor Sinsabaugh was 14th in 14:12.03, Sophie Williams was 16th in 14:59.82, and Mark Myers was 27th in 15:01.3.
