STRONG SECOND QUARTER PROPELS HORSEHEADS PAST WAVERLY

WAVERLY — Horseheads had a huge second quarter on both ends of the
floor, and that was the difference in a 42-29 win over Waverly here
Thursday night in non-league boys basketball action.
Nate DeLill
scored five points in the first quarter, and Jay Pipher knocked down a
3-pointer to help Waverly to a 10-6 lead after the first eight minutes.
Seven
different Horseheads players put their name in the second quarter in a
16-1 blitz that put the Blue Raiders up 22-11 at the half. Waverly was
held without a field goal, and was 1-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Isaiah Bretz scored all six of Waverly’s points in a third quarter that saw both teams scored six points.
Bretz
added seven points in the fourth quarter, and Pipher canned a
3-pointer, but Horseheads added two points to the margin of victory.
The Blue Raiders notched the win despite not attempting one free throw in the game.
Bretz
led Waverly with 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists, while
Pipher had six points, four rebounds, and two steals, DeLill added five
points and a team-high eight rebounds, Jake VanHouten chipped in with
four points, Kayleb Bechy hauled down six rebounds, and Nehemiah Anthony
had three boards and two assists.
Waverly returns to action Saturday afternoon at Elmira.
