WAVERLY DROPS FIVE-SET HEARTBREAKER IN CLASS C OPENER
 

DRYDEN — Waverly started strong, but Dryden prevailed in a hard-fought third set, then completed a come-from-behind, 3-2, win here Monday night in the opening round of the Section IV, Class C volleyball playoffs.

The Lady Wolverines won an epic first set 27-25, then took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the second set.

The Lady Purple Lions fended off Waverly in the third set, 25-21, then pulled out wins of 25-18 and 25-19 to advance to a quarter-final match-up at top-seeded Lansing.

Eighth-grader Brilynn Belles led Waverly with 16 service points, including 10 aces, and 15 digs, while junior Michael Lauper had 19 setter assists, 13 digs, four points (three aces), and two kills, and freshman Lillie Kirk had 13 points (four aces), seven digs, and two kills.

Sophomore Peyton Shaw had 12 points (three aces), nine kills, two blocks, and three digs, while senior Sydney Nierstedt had six points, four kills, and three digs, sophomore Paighten Streeter contributed three points, 11 kills, and 10 digs, sophomore Erica Ryck added two points (two aces), two digs, and four assists, and senior Derek Bartlett chipped in with two digs.

Waverly completes its season with a 7-10 record.
