
WAVERLY FALLS AT SOUTHERN CAYUGA, 49-4

POPLAR RIDGE, N.Y. — Waverly jumped out to a big lead early, but
Southern Cayuga rallied for a 49-45 win here Tuesday afternoon in IAC
girls swimming & diving action.
The Lady Wolverines won the
first three events, finishing 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard
IM to take a 21-5 lead, but the Lady Chiefs rallied, eventually tying
the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The
meet remained tied through the next two events, and Southern Cayuga won
the meet-closing 400-yard freestyle relay to clinch the victory.
Juniors
Willow Sharpsteen and Lourden Benjamin were triple-winners to lead
Waverly, and junior Delaney Vascoe was a double-winner.
Sharpsteen
won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:25.87, and Mara Callear
finished second in 2:30.81. Sharpsteen also won the 100-yard butterfly
in a time of 1:13.24, and Elizabeth Robinson was third in 1:36.12.
Benjamin
won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:37.06, and Robinson was second in
3:08.73 She also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:10.94
Benjamin, Vascoe, Sharpsteen, and Sophia Desisti teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:12.56.
Vascoe won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:24.33.
DeSisti
finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.9 seconds, and Callear
was second in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:39.88.
Vascoe finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:06.12.
Waverly closes out the 2021 season Saturday at the IAC Championships at Watkins Glen.
