WAVERLY JV TOPS SAYRE IN CONSOLATION GAME OF VALLEY CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

ATHENS — Waverly held Sayre off the scoreboard for more than a quarter to start the game en route to a 43-13 win Wednesday afternoon in the consolation game of the junior varsity boys Valley Christmas Tournament.

Jon Searles scored eight points in the first quarter, and Bryce LaForest added four in a 14-0 game-opening blitz.

LaForest bombed home a trio of 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the second quarter to fuel a 16-3 run that gave the junior Wolverines a 30-3 advantage at the half.

Only Nick Pellicano’s 3-pointer prevented a first-half shutout.

Waverly outscored Sayre. 11-7, in the third quarter, but Sayre had a 3-2 edge in the final eight minutes.

LaForest led Waverly 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and three steals, while Searles added 12 points and 10 boards, and Jake VanHouten chipped in with six points and four rebounds.

Alex Burgess hauled down seven rebounds for Waverly, while Nehemiah Anthony dished out two assists.

Pellicano led Sayre with six points on a pair of 3-pointers.
