SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — South Williamsport capitalized on a trio of Waverly
errors to pull out a 5-3 win here Thursday afternoon in non-league
baseball action.
The Mounties scored two runs in the home half of
the first inning as the result of a walk, and a two-out outfield error
that allowed both runners to score.
The Wolverines tied the game up in the top of the third.
With
one out, senior Thomas Hand walked, and junior Bryce Bailey reached on
an error. With two outs, senior Caden Hollywood put Waverly on the board
with an RBI double to close the gap to 2-1.
Back-to-back walks to senior Brennan Traub and Tomasso forced home a run to tie the game.
South Williamsport took advantage of another Waverly error in the home half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Mounties tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-2.
Tomasso
led off the top of the sixth win a single, stole second, and eventually
scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 5-3.
The
Wolverines threatened in the seventh with a two-out walk to junior Ty
Beeman and a single by Hollywood, but a strikeout ended the game.
Tomasso
was the hard-luck loser in the game. He allowed five runs — only one
earned — on one hit, while striking out six and walking six.
Hollywood
doubled and singled, and drove in one run to pace Waverly at the plate,
while Tomasso singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Beeman
added a single. Hand and Bailey each scored a run for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 9-4, plays at Athens and Sayre Saturday.
