
WAVERLY PULLS OUT 42-39 WIN OVER CHENANGO FORKS

WAVERLY — Jake VanHouten scored 18 points, and knocked down a pair of
crucial free throws in the closing seconds of Waverly’s 42-39 non-league
junior varsity boys basketball action Friday night.
Jon Searles scored four points in the first quarter to help Waverly to a 9-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
VanHouten
knocked down a 3-pointer early in the second quarter and scored nine
points in the stanza, and Nehemiah Anthony canned a 3-pointer and scored
five points as Waverly outscored Forks, 18-15, to take a 27-23 lead
into the halftime locker room.
Forks outscored Waverly, 9-5, in the third quarter to send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 32-32.
VanHouten
scored six points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of free
throws with 7 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Waverly missed its
first three foul shots of the fourth quarter, and was 5-for-13 in the
game.
VanHouten led Waverly with 18 points, five rebounds, two
assists, six steals, and five blocked shots, while Carter George scored
seven points, and Anthony had seven points, five rebounds, and two
assists.
Searles added six points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and
one blocked shot in the win, and Bryce LaForest chipped in with four
points, five rebounds, and four steals.
Waverly finishes the
regular season at 15-4, and will host Trumansburg Wednesday in the
overall IAC Large School Championship game.
